Snowplay Statement

Snowplay

Snow rarely impacts Vancouver, so when it does, we urbanites are struck with wonder, as though we’ve returned to a simpler time or discovered an enchanted world. The series “Snowplay,” shot during the snowstorm of 2017, captures this return.

The whole city seemed to hold its breath as the first flakes fell. Most of us were sure it wouldn’t stick, but after a full day, our streets and fields were covered in thick white. Our obligations stood still as adults exchanged their laptops for sleds and took to the hills.

I grabbed my camera and documented the impact the unusual weather had on our lives during that time. The monochromatic portraits of adults and children immersed in winter translate the sense of quiet that blanketed our city, and the exuberance it brought out of our people. The series celebrates that pause, the return to innocence and connection that came with playing in the snow.
